Ice Choppin’ and Wood Haulin’…
Slapped soundly on the virtual wrist by my good buddy Carolyn for having elderly blog posts, I am here to share with you my very glamorous day in Maine. It actually started last night with a chimney fire – contained, thank heavens, but damage was done to the liner. In “going green”, we apparently didn’t realize that those wonderful biobricks burn HOT, and boy-o-boy…
Anyhoo – I hauled three or four buckets of nasty stinky creosote out to the snow, dressed in Tom’s sexy boots and hunting jacket. I decided to follow the whole thing up with a thorough cleaning of the soot trap (or whatever they call it) and a good ol’ fashioned driveway chopping with the four kids. It’s actually gorgeous out here today, but we are heading into four days of tundra-like weather. That’ll be fun without with the woodstove!
You people in the warmer climates don’t know what you are missing…
Hi Margie – let us know when you want to do an assay on the land here. Maybe we can find some decent wood for you (not sure though).
Your woodstove is not working?
s
Scott – it will be up and running again next Tuesday, if all goes well – once the liner is replaced in the chimney.
So everything is toasty again I hope?
Merry Christmas!
s
YES! Happily toasty!
I have a fairly steep hill to haul wood up from the woodpile to our woodbox outside the back door. I use a wheelbarrow fine when there is no snow. When the snow is deep I blow a trail to the pile and I have a large sturdy plastic box strapped to the top of a conventional 1945 metal rail sled. The problem is when there is snow on the ground and none on the driveway I have to cross. I fixed that real good with 2 one half inch steel axles attached to the tapered metal supports to the rails with crossed pipe clamps with 4 wheels attached on the ends. It rolls well over the snow as well as a hard surface and even the womenfolk in the house with orthopedic problems can tow up the three loads it takes to fill the wood bin.

I am constantly looking for sources of firewood. If anyone has some dead hardwoods that need removal, I have a 4 x 8 trailer and a 2001 Honda 350 Rancher ATV with big rear tires and a cart to tow out the wood with that I can bring to the closest road for a share of the wood. I can also share in the cuttin' and totin' when the snow clears. Y'all get back now heah?
I'm always looking for firewood to cut. $$ has been very tight so if there is anybody wanting to get rid of tree's in thier yard i'll be happy to take them away for free.
Bill & Tom, you guys should team up
